Steve Moore Discusses Potential Effects on Illinois Hospitals Should Tax Exemption Criteria Change

January 31, 2018

Steve Moore—a Chicago-based partner and leader of the National Health Care Group at Hinshaw—was quoted in an article published by Cook County Record titled, "Illinois courts review hospital tax exemptions, with millions in tax revenue, viability in the balance." The article addresses the ongoing issue about which Illinois hospitals networks and healthcare provider groups should pay property taxes.

"[While it's] understandable that a taxing body would want to recoup every dollar it can in revenue, at a time when many hospitals are barely hanging on, asserting a sudden [lack] of tax-exempt status could push them under," Moore said. He also noted that rural hospitals are currently particularly vulnerable to economic shock, including incurring a significant new tax bill.
