Kevin Joseph Burke Talks Bar Exam Preparation With The American Lawyer

July 19, 2016

Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP Chairman Kevin Joseph Burke was featured in the article "Lawyer Bar Exam Prep Tips: 'I've Got the Nuns Praying for Me,'" published in The Am Law Daily on July 19, 2016.

The article includes suggestions for passing the bar exam from Mr. Burke and other well-known Chicago lawyers. Reflecting on his own experience preparing for the bar exam, Mr. Burke said, "Not far from a house I was renting in Wilmette[, Illinois] was Mallinckrodt College, which was run by nuns and had a big library. So I went in there and asked if I could use the library to prepare, and I remember a nun looked at me really seriously and said, 'You want to prepare for the bar exam here?' I said yes. She gave me a key so I could go there at night when I wasn't working at Hinshaw. Nobody was at this place, and it looked like a great big mansion in Wilmette. So I would go there at night and the nuns would come and visit me and bring me food. The first time, two nuns came in and said, 'What are you doing?' I explained myself, and then they would come visit every night and when they left they'd say, 'We're all praying for you.' So I'm thinking, 'This is great. I've got the nuns praying for me.'"
