Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP Announces New Managing Partner and Other Firm Leaders

Appointments Serve to Re-Generate and Add to Diversity of Firm Leadership

May 18, 2016

Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP is pleased to announce that partner and past Government Practice Group Leader Robert T. Shannon has been named Managing Partner. In addition to appointing Mr. Shannon as Managing Partner, Hinshaw Chairman Kevin Joseph Burke announced several new leadership appointments to the firm's Management Committee, Practice Group, and Partner-in-Charge positions.

"We are in a time of fundamental changes in the legal services market and these appointments bring in fresh thinking and build upon our diversity. They reflect Hinshaw's tradition of developing talent and these new leaders will advance our focus on collaboration, innovation, and efficiency in all that we do," said Mr. Burke. He added, "Bob and the other new leaders embody Hinshaw's culture and its values. Each of them has shown that they have the talent and commitment to lead as we continue to provide outstanding service and pursue strategic initiatives to grow our national business, consumer financial, professional, and insurance industry practices."

As Managing Partner, Mr. Shannon will assist in implementing the firm's operational and strategic efforts and will coordinate the relocation of Hinshaw's Chicago headquarters to a new, modern space designed by noted architect John Ronan and developed by the John Buck Company. Mr. Shannon will continue to represent clients in governmental and regulatory matters. He succeeds J. William Roberts, who became Hinshaw's Managing Partner in 1997 and who will continue to serve the firm as Special Counsel.

Mr. Shannon commented, "I'm thrilled to take on this new role. Hinshaw is well-positioned to serve its current and future clients as the legal landscape becomes even more dynamic. Hinshaw has a great history of leadership and I look forward to working with Chairman Burke to achieve even greater firm success."

Throughout his career, Mr. Shannon has been involved in several high-profile matters, including successfully representing the Chicago White Sox and Cook County Sheriff's Office at trial. As part of his government litigation practice, he counsels elected officials and public entities. In 2014, he was honored by the Jury Verdict Reporter for obtaining one of the top defense verdicts of the year in Cook County for his successful defense of the Chicago White Sox at trial. In addition to heading up Hinshaw's Government Practice Group, Mr. Shannon has served on the firm's Executive Committee and as Chair of its Hiring Committee.

Other appointments made by Mr. Burke include the following:

Management Committee

Practice Group Leaders

Office Partners-in-Charge

Said Mr. Burke, "In my first year as Chairman, it has been my purpose and commitment to open up opportunities for new partners, particularly our diverse and women attorneys, and to think of ways to connect them to the heart of what we do here. This will, with ongoing attention, be part of our ethos at Hinshaw. We will continually focus on this core belief, our focus on diversity and inclusion, and on developing talent and leaders within."

Following is additional information on the new Management Committee members:

Michael Marick represents property and casualty insurers in high-exposure coverage disputes across the country. He is ranked in Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business, in 2015 was named Chicago Insurance Law "Lawyer of the Year" by The Best Lawyers in America, and is a Regent of the American College of Coverage and Extracontractual Counsel. He also serves as a National Director of the Defense Research Institute.

Maura McKelvey and Schuyler Kraus previously co-chaired Hinshaw's Consumer Financial Services Practice Group and both currently serve on the firm's Executive Committee. Ms. McKelvey represents mortgage servicers, lenders, and trustees of securitized mortgage trusts in civil litigation matters throughout New England in both the trial and appellate courts. She joined Hinshaw in 2005, when the Boston office was established.

Mr. Kraus joined Hinshaw's New York office in 2004. He represents mortgage lenders, servicers and investors in complex consumer financial litigation matters in federal and state court. Mr. Kraus's appellate work continues to shape the law in New York as it concerns the defense of claims brought by consumers. Additionally, he regularly counsels clients regarding first party and third party insurance disputes.

Mr. De La Mora, who joined Hinshaw in 2014 as part of Hinshaw's merger Barger & Wolen LLP, also has been named a full member of Hinshaw's Management Committee. Mr. De La Mora focuses his practice on the representation of insurers and managed health care plans in regulatory and litigation matters before the departments of Insurance and the courts.
