Mike Dowell Discusses Need for Compliance Plans in Light of DEA Controlled Substance Compliance Inspections and Audits

Hinshaw partner Mike Dowell authored a two part Compliance Today article titled "DEA Inspections and Audits Warrant Compliance Plan." In Part 1, Dowell outlined the Controlled Substances Act (CSA)—which is enforced by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)—the mission of the DEA, and its response to the opioid crisis. He also addresses a variety of requirements for pharmacies under the CSA, including those involving record-keeping, security, and dispensing. In Part 2, Dowell reviewed reporting requirements and issues concerning the development of a controlled substance compliance program.
