The Crain’s Chicago Business Notable Leaders in Accounting, Consulting & Law award recognizes senior-level leaders in accounting, consulting, and law who have demonstrated the ability to effect positive change within their organizations, serve as role models and mentors, and contribute in meaningful ways to their communities through leadership roles in professional and nonprofit service organizations.
According to Crain’s, this year’s 135 honorees are recognized for their ability to “guide clients through litigation, transactions, regulatory change and growth strategy,” as well as “lead teams, offices and national practices while advising clients on high-stakes matters.”

Scott has served as co-chair of Hinshaw’s global Insurance Services Practice Group for more than a decade. He has been a key driver in growing the group to more than 110 attorneys, 75 percent of whom are diverse.
Under Scott’s leadership, the Insurance Services Practice Group is ranked in Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business in Insurance: Dispute Resolution nationally and regionally in California, Florida, and Illinois. The group is also ranked Tier 1 nationally and regionally in Chicago in Insurance Law by Best Law Firms®. He has also played a critical role in the group’s strategic direction and expansion in key markets, generating over $58 million in revenue.
Legal Practice
Regarded nationally as an eminent property and casualty insurance coverage litigator, Scott represents insurers and businesses in high-stakes litigation matters in trial and appellate courts nationwide. His practice encompasses insurance, reinsurance, extra-contractual, cybersecurity, commercial, and D&O matters.
Among his notable recent matters, Scott and his team successfully represented insurers in multi-million-dollar cases, including a high-stakes asbestos coverage matter in New York, two nationwide health insurance class action matters, a lead paint coverage case in California, a cyber breach matter, and several significant environmental, product, and toxic tort coverage cases.
Thought Leadership and Recognitions
Scott is widely recognized for his thought leadership and impact on insurance law. He was named to the inaugural list of Midwest Trailblazers by The American Lawyer magazine. The list recognizes 50 professionals from 12 Midwestern states “who have moved the needle in the legal industry” and “are truly agents of change.” He was selected for his “high-profile, complex insurance coverage cases nationwide, which resulted in precedent-setting rulings that have altered insurance law.”
Scott was also named to Crain’s Chicago Business 2025 Notable Litigators & Trial Lawyers. Scott has a Band 1 ranking in Insurance: Dispute Resolution – Illinois from Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business and has been ranked for the past 17 years. He has been recognized as a Top Insurance author for the last six consecutive years in the JD Supra Readers’ Choice Awards.
He has co-authored a leading two-volume insurance treatise, Allocation of Losses in Complex Insurance Coverage Claims (13th Ed. Thomson Reuters), and America 250: The History of Insurance & Insurance Coverage Law & Litigation in the United States. He is a fellow of the American College of Coverage Counsel, the American Bar Foundation, and the Litigation Counsel of America.
Community Involvement
Scott is actively involved in nonprofit and legal industry organizations. He co-founded the Lymphoma Research Foundation’s Chicago Chapter and is a founding board member of the Hippocratic Cancer Research Foundation. He also co-chaired a gala benefitting the Lurie Cancer Center.
A proponent of public service, he served as a member of the National Board of Selectors of the Jefferson Awards for Public Service (Nobel Prize for public and community service). In this capacity, he selected national winners, served on a delegation presenting reports to the White House and the US Senate on the state of volunteering in America, and was involved in a national high school leadership and philanthropy program. He also served as co-chair of the Jefferson Awards Chicago.
