Raylene DeWitte Grischow successfully completed a seven-day federal trial in a Section 1983 case in which a federal pre-trial detainee alleged that jail medical and correctional staff were deliberately indifferent to his serious medical needs while incarcerated at the Sangamon County, Illinois jail awaiting trial. Representing four correctional officers, including the jail warden, and two nurses, Raylene previously had succeeded in getting the Sangamon County Sheriff dismissed from the case on summary judgment. The remaining individuals were sued in their individual capacity, and plaintiff sought punitive damages.
The jury returned a defense verdict for all six Hinshaw clients. This is Raylene's second successful federal jury trial this year for the Sangamon County Sheriff's Department. In March, she obtained a victory for a Sangamon County Deputy Sheriff in a Section 1983 excessive force lawsuit.
