Wendy Chang, a Los Angeles-based Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP partner and member of the firm's Lawyers for the Profession® group, authored a piece for the ABA/BNA Lawyers' Manual on Professional Conduct titled "What Are the Ethical Implications of Artificial Intelligence Use in Legal Practice?" In her article, Chang discusses the ethical duties of lawyers when it comes to using Artificial Intelligence (AI), which she defines as "the ability of a machine to perform what normally can be done by the human mind." The ethical duties addressed include competence and independent judgment; confidentiality; supervising to ensure the firm is conforming to the rules; and the unauthorized practice of law (UPL). In summation, Chang cautions lawyers to take reasonable steps to familiarize themselves with the AI technology that is coming and make adjustments so that they're ethically compliant.
