Hinshaw immigration partner Ian Wagreich was quoted by the student newspaper The DePaulia in a story that examined the Trump Administration's revocation of student visas and its impact on international students attending universities in the United States. Ian recently participated in a related "Know Your Rights" workshop for faculty, students, and staff at DePaul University.
Ian explained to reporter Khadija Mujahid that most student visas have been revoked for one of three reasons: students who protested Israel's attacks on Gaza, students who had legal violations such as minor traffic tickets, and students whose visas were removed for "no discernible reason."
While some Student and Exchange Visitor Information Systems (SEVIS) records and visas are being reinstated, he noted that significant uncertainty remains for students whose visas had been formally revoked by the State Department. Ian said ICE's restored access to SEVIS for students from whom the State Department had not formally revoked visas left "some ambiguity" for students whose visas had been revoked.
"A lot is still in flux," Ian told The DePaulia. "Any new policy is likely to create processing delays and increased scrutiny of international students, and is part of the current administration's broader pattern of attacking institutions of higher education in the U.S."
