Daniel Shatz represents clients in complex business and insurance coverage disputes. With experience at all stages of litigation—from regulatory investigations to mediation and settlement conferences to evidentiary hearings and trials—he ensures clients are informed throughout the process and provides solutions tailored to their unique legal issues.

Prior to joining Hinshaw, Daniel worked at local and national law firms, where he obtained experience in a wide range of litigation matters, including intellectual property, employment, probate, zoning, and insurance coverage. He has represented clients in individual and class actions before state, federal, and bankruptcy courts.

Following the completion of law school and before entering into private practice, Daniel was a judicial clerk to the Honorable Robert Gross, Judge, Fourth District Court of Appeal, in West Palm Beach, Florida. While still a student at Cornell Law School, Daniel was a research assistant to Professor Sherry F. Colb, an editor of the Legal Information Supreme Court Bulletin and the Cornell Journal of Law and Public Policy, and a member of the Mock Trial and Moot Court Boards. He was also a judicial extern to the Honorable Joan H. Lefkow, U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.

Representative Matters

Daniel has been involved in numerous successful client representations. A few notable cases include:

Commercial Litigation

  • Handled contract and landlord-tenant disputes for a commercial real estate firm.
  • Defended a media company in defamation and libel actions.
  • Represented beneficiaries in a dispute involving alleged spoliation of evidence and tortious interference with inheritance.
  • Defended a credit-reporting agency in class action lawsuits alleging Fair Credit Reporting Act violations.

Insurance Coverage

  • Represented numerous insurance companies in coverage disputes, including the successful vacatur of a $10 million judgment, the entry of favorable verdicts and summary judgment rulings in lawsuits involving alleged business interruptions, storm and hurricane damages, and the duty to defend or indemnify with regard to underlying tort liability actions.

Intellectual Property

  • Defended an entertainment company and news website in copyright infringement actions.
  • Defended a clothing manufacturer in trade dress infringement actions.

Directors & Officers Liability

  • Obtained a dismissal following an evidentiary hearing on behalf of an officer in a fraudulent transfer action.

Labor & Employment

  • Resolved an employment dispute before the EEOC for a hair salon concerning charges of discrimination.
