Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP today announced that Karen V. Nathan has joined the firm as a partner in the firm’s Health Care practice in Chicago. Formerly an in-house senior litigation attorney with CNA Insurance Companies, she has more than three decades of experience representing medical professionals and facilities in medical malpractice litigation in state and federal courts, as well as compliance matters before state agencies.
Formerly a practicing registered nurse, Nathan maintains an active nursing license in solidarity with her health care clients and in order to remain current on medical best practices and technology.
"I’ve worked closely with Karen for a number of years,” said Diane Webster, partner-in-charge of firm’s Chicago office. "With her background as a healthcare professional, she brings an almost unparalleled depth of knowledge around many of the most critical legal risks and issues facing our health care clients. We’re thrilled to have Karen as part of our heath care defense team in Chicago."
Nathan represents hospitals, nursing homes, physicians, dentists, nurses, mental health providers and other health care professionals in complex medical malpractice and premise liability litigation before state and federal courts. She advises companies on risk and compliance matters, and represents professionals and companies before the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.
When Nathan decided to return to private law practice, she said Hinshaw was very attractive because of its geographic footprint, opportunities for growth and collaboration, and its collegial spirit.
"I am very excited about the increased opportunities to collaborate with my peers," she said. "I’ve known Diane and the Hinshaw health care team for many years and have always respected the firm and its culture. With my knowledge of the health care industry, I will bring additional insights to client matters and look forward to sharing those insights with members of the team."
Nathan received a B.S. in nursing from Oakland University, and continued to work as a practicing nurse while attending law school. She earned her J.D., cum laude, from Case Western Reserve University Law School. Prior to joining CNA Insurance in 2012, she practiced law at Querrey & Harrow in Chicago.
