Cathy Mulrow-Peattie Outlines Seven Steps for Small and Mid-Sized Businesses to Protect Themselves From Cyberattacks

Hinshaw partner Cathy Mulrow-Peattie was featured in an informational flyout in the July 2025 edition of the Florida Trend Magazine.
The flyout provides a series of tips for small and mid-sized businesses on cybersecurity threat preparedness.
Cathy notes that hackers are increasingly using artificial intelligence (AI) to target small to mid-sized companies, which were once much less likely to be the target of ransomware attacks. “These cyber criminals, as well as threat actors from other countries, [are] looking for data and money—wires and other types of payments that can make them money. This is a business to them, and this needs to be understood as well,” she said.
To help protect smaller businesses from cyberattacks, Cathy described a series of practical security measures companies can take using the steps below:
