Sergio E. Acosta, the Chicago-based leader of the White Collar Defense & Internal Investigations Practice at Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP, has been appointed by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel to co-chair the city's newly created Task Force on Police Accountability. Mr. Acosta — who previously served on the mayor's Ethics Reform Task Force — and his four fellow task force co-chairs were appointed for their experience and status as "respected leaders in criminal justice."
After reviewing the system of accountability, oversight and training currently in place for Chicago’s police officers, the task force will recommend reforms to the current system to: (1) improve independent oversight of police misconduct; (2) ensure that officers with repeated complaints against them are identified and evaluated appropriately; and (3) establish best practices for release of videos of police-involved incidents.
Mr. Acosta is an experienced criminal litigator and investigator. He has represented companies, government entities and individuals in matters involving the FCPA, complex financial fraud, criminal tax violations, export regulations and criminal forfeiture. His practice also encompasses corporate governance, corporate internal investigations, regulatory enforcement, commercial litigation and gaming law. Before joining Hinshaw, Mr. Acosta held leading roles in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Illinois; served as Administrator of the Illinois Gaming Board; and was a prosecutor in the Miami-Dade County State Attorney's Office. He also served as a member of then-Illinois Governor Pat Quinn's Illinois Concealed Carry License Review Board.
