Coral Gables, FL. — Elizabeth S. Baker, a partner in the Coral Gables office of the national law firm of Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP, has been selected to receive the 2013 Benjamin L. Cardin Public Service Award. The award is given to a University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law alum who has demonstrated significant contributions to furthering the ideals of public service in the law. This annual award was created in 1986 and renamed in 1988 to recognize Maryland Senator Benjamin L. Cardin’s exemplary legal services leadership and public service.
Ms. Baker is a Florida Board Certified Marital and Family Lawyer who focuses her practice in family and domestic litigation at the trial and appellate levels. Highly respected for her professionalism and accomplishments before the bench and bar and beyond, Ms. Baker has — through her more than 4,000 hours of pro bono work and her private practice representation — contributed greatly to the advancement of the Family Law Bar in Florida throughout her career. Many of the cases she has handled resulted in good results that protected her clients’ rights and interests. In other instances, her legal assistance culminated in positive, life-altering results for the individuals and families she represented.
Both in the courtroom and outside of it, Ms. Baker has been dedicated to advancing domestic violence awareness and prevention, children’s advocacy, the literary arts and women’s studies, and has channeled her many efforts in this regard through several organizations. Ms. Baker also serves on the Legal Services of Greater Miami’s Campaign for Equal Justice Committee to raise funds for the purposes of representing indigent clients in civil matters. She takes pro bono appointments from judges in Miami-Dade County and participates in Dade Legal Aid’s Put Something Back program. She is a past president and current board member of The Safespace Foundation, for which she has volunteered since 1978.
