The national law firm of Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP is pleased to announce that Scott Seaman – a Chicago-based partner and co-chair of Hinshaw’s global Insurance Services Practice Group – has been elected as a fellow of the American Bar Foundation (ABF).
The ABF Fellows is a global honorary society that recognizes attorneys, judges, law faculty, and legal scholars whose public and private careers have demonstrated outstanding dedication to the highest principles of the legal profession and to the welfare of their communities. ABF Fellows hail from nearly 40 countries and hold a wide variety of influential roles. The Fellows was established in 1955 and is limited to one percent of attorneys in each state. Hinshaw partners Steven Puiszis, Tomislav Kuzmanovic, and Kent Keller have also previously been elected as ABF Fellows.
Seaman has been actively engaged for decades in the legal community and in a wide-range of community and national service and philanthropic activities involving public service, cancer and patient health, civil rights, and conservation and animal rights. Among other activities, he served on the National Board of Selectors of the Jefferson Awards for Public Service, served on a delegation presenting reports to the White House and the U.S. Senate on the state of volunteering in America, helped lead a youth service and leadership program focused on at risk youth, co-founded a local chapter of a national cancer organization, and is a founding board member of the Hippocratic Cancer Research Foundation.
A commercial litigator and trial lawyer with more than 33 years of experience, Seaman is widely regarded as one of the leading attorneys in the United States representing insurers and reinsurers in property and casualty matters. He has a long track record of successfully representing companies before trial courts, appellate courts, and arbitration panels across the country in a variety of high stakes cases and matters involving general liability coverage, professional liability coverage, first-party property coverage, bad faith and extra-contractual matters, fee disputes, and facultative and treaty reinsurance contracts. He has served as national coverage counsel as well as trial and appellate counsel. Seaman also advises and represents companies on cyber, data breach, IoT, nanotechnology, gig economy, viruses and pandemics, representations and warranties and transactional insurance, social unrest, climate change, and other emerging issues, as well as a wide-range of case-specific and portfolio issues. He also has handled a variety of challenging international, professional liability, health/life science, director and officer liability, tort and product liability, and business and commercial cases. He is a thought leader in insurance and business law and a prolific author and speaker.
The ABF recognition follows on the heels of Seaman receiving a Band 1 Ranking from Chambers USA: American’s Leading Lawyers for Business and recognition as one of the nation's Top Authors in Insurance from the JD Supra Readers’ Choice Awards. Earlier this year, Seaman was named to the inaugural list of Midwest Trailblazers by The American Lawyer magazine. The list recognizes 50 professionals from 12 Midwestern states "who have moved the needle in the legal industry" and "are truly agents of change." He was selected for his "high-profile, complex insurance coverage cases nationwide, which resulted in precedent setting rulings that have altered insurance law."
