Hinshaw & Culbertson Partner Joshua Vincent Named a Fellow in the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers

The U.S. law firm of Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP today announced that partner Joshua G. Vincent has been named a Fellow in the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers (AAAL). He will be formally inducted in a ceremony on Friday, October 5, 2018, at the AAAL Fall Meeting. Vincent is a member of the firm's executive committee and a leader in the firm's nationally-ranked Appellate Practice Group who has briefed and argued more than 350 appeals resulting in 180 published decisions.

Josh has distinguished himself as a leading appellate lawyer in Illinois and beyond, both by the number of successful appeals he has argued as well as the published decisions that have resulted from his great work," said Gretchen Harris Sperry, chair of the Hinshaw & Culbertson Appellate Practice Group.  

Membership in AAAL is limited to the 500 experienced appellate advocates in the nation who have demonstrated the highest skill level and integrity, according to the AAAL. Nominations can only be made by current Fellows and are vetted by the legal and judicial communities in a confidential process. Academy Fellows rank among the "Who's Who" of appellate practice in the jurisdictions where they appear, AAAL notes.

Vincent has appeared a dozen times in the Illinois Supreme Court, and has practiced before the U.S. Courts of Appeal for the Seventh, Eighth, Ninth, Tenth, Eleventh and Federal Circuits, as well as appellate courts of several other states, including Florida, New Jersey and Ohio. He has overturned adverse appellate court decisions and multimillion-dollar verdicts, and successfully upheld favorable trial court outcomes. 

His appellate work has involved nearly all of the Hinshaw's practice areas, including: commercial disputes, labor and employment, professional and products liability, insurance coverage, administrative review, eminent domain, and criminal justice.

Vincent joined Hinshaw in May 1983 and was elected a partner in 1989. In addition to his own appellate work, he supervises pro bono appellate matters, including the prosecution of direct criminal appeals in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. As the long-time head of the firm's Professional Development Program, he has overseen the education and training of young lawyers. He was recently named a Finalist in the "Best Mentor: Law Firms" category in the 2018 American Lawyer Industry Awards.

Vincent's influence goes beyond Hinshaw. He is a member of the CLE Advisory Group to the Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Professionalism and chairs the Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Access to Justice's Appellate Forms Subcommittee. He is on the Board of Directors for the Public Interest Law Initiative.

He earned his J.D. from DePaul University College of Law in 1983 and his A.B. from the University of Michigan in 1980.
