The U.S. law firm Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP is delighted to announce that partner Brian McGrath, co-chair of the firm's Consumer Financial Services Practice Group, has been recognized by Crain's New York Business as a 2023 Notable LGBTQIA+ Leader.
Each year, Crain's New York Business honors the top LGBTQIA+ business leaders in the New York City metro area. The honorees are selected based on their involvement in mentoring programs, community and philanthropic organizations, and their commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives and inclusive hiring practices in their respective industries.
McGrath is the first openly gay leader in the history of Hinshaw's Consumer Financial Services practice and has helped steer the strategic growth of a group consisting of more than 35 diverse attorneys. In addition, he has played a significant role in the opening of new offices at the firm.
His leadership extends far beyond the firm. As one of New York's most successful LGBTQ lawyers, he has been a driving force behind advancing diversity and equality through his leadership roles on the New York City Bar LGBTQ Rights Committee, the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity, and as a member of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Federal Club Council. McGrath has forged strategic partnerships between Hinshaw and various groups, including the HRC and Immigration Equality. Notably, in 2022 he partnered with HRC to implement educational programs to counteract the misunderstandings that led to rollbacks on LGBTQ rights in Florida and other states across the nation.
Highly regarded as a leading state banking law practitioner, he is a recognized thought leader on mortgage servicing issues, including recent changes to the New York state statute of limitations and the New York Foreclosure Abuse Prevention Law. He serves on the New York Mortgage Bankers Association mortgage servicing committee.
McGrath is active in various nonprofit organizations and serves on the board of the Development Authority of the North Country, a public benefit corporation supporting the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum. He is also on the board of the SUNY Oswego College Council and the Presidential Search Committee, and is a member of the Lewis County Health Systems Foundation board and co-chair of the fundraising committee for the hospital's $30 million capital campaign.
