"April is a dynamic and creative litigator, with a significant track record of success," said David Hanus, co-partner-in-charge of Hinshaw’s Milwaukee office. "In addition to a heavy case load, she is actively involved in attracting top-level diverse talent and mentoring associates on the path to partnership at Hinshaw. We are happy to see that her contributions to the community and the legal profession have been recognized by the Milwaukee BizTimes."
Toy represents clients in complex litigation matters, including personal injury and premises liability defense, construction defect litigation, insurance coverage disputes and bad faith claims. She has taken several cases through jury trial. Earlier this year, she was among lead attorneys who successfully obtained a significant summary judgment win on behalf of client Chula Vista Inc. in a class action in Wisconsin federal court. The high-profile suit against the Wisconsin Dells resort and waterpark sought $20 million in damages with potential exposure of $60 million under Wisconsin law.
The daughter of a Salvadoran immigrant, Toy is committed to diversity and inclusion efforts at the firm and through several professional organizations. She is the current co-chair of Hinshaw’s Hispanic Latino Affinity Network and also serves as Region IX president of the Hispanic National Bar Association, which includes Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan. Through her leadership role, she is actively involved in HNBA efforts to diversify the federal judiciary.
In addition to mentoring Hinshaw associates, she serves as a mentor to law students and each year interviews students for diversity clerkships for the State Bar of Wisconsin Diversity Clerkship Program.
Toy also dedicates her time and talent to her community. She is an active member of the national board of the Hispanic Alliance for Career Enhancement, which works to provide practical skills to help Hispanics succeed in the workplace. She is also on the board of the Wisconsin Trust Account Foundation, which oversees allocation of funds to provide legal services to underserved communities.
