Wendy Chang, a Los Angeles-based partner in the Lawyers for the Profession® group at Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP, was quoted in the article "When Lawyers Attack: Bad Behavior On The Rise In The Legal Profession" published by Law360 on March 11, 2016.
The article examines the recent trend seen in the legal profession — a growing culture of unprofessionalism, rudeness and intentional uncooperativeness among lawyers — and the creation of a movement by a collection of states and organizations to reaffirm the importance of civility in the law.
The article several possible causes for this trend, one being the influx of lawyers in the marketplace, particularly mobile lawyers who practice across different jurisdictions, meaning that the chances of attorneys sitting across from an opposing counsel who is a complete stranger are greater. Ms. Chang is quoted as saying "[w]ith more lawyers in general, there is a smaller possibility that any lawyer will have to one day work again with an opposing counsel, especially in the civil litigation arena, and some develop an unfortunate sense that they are insulated from any consequences for uncivil behavior."
