Ron Kammer – co-partner in charge of the Miami office of Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP and the National Business Unit Leader of the firm’s Insurance Practice – was quoted in a Florida Trend article titled "Autonomous Vehicles in Florida: Open Arms, No Hands." The article looks at the significance of the 2016 bill that made Florida the first state to allow fully autonomous cars on public roads and the challenges on the road ahead.
As described by Florida Trend, the 2016 bill eliminated the requirement for a backup human driver and expanded the legal use of autonomous vehicles beyond testing. The fear of "political backlash" as jobs are impacted, lack of properly supportive infrastructure, the potential for technical issues, cost and a "host of legal and regulatory issues" are described as among the greatest challenges Florida will face as it makes strides toward a driverless future. "No system is foolproof," Kammer cautioned, "There will still be accidents [and] there will still be litigation."
