The Chicago Daily Law Bulletin on August 26, 2011, interviewed Patrick L. Patras—a Partner in the Chicago office of Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP who focuses on patent litigation—on Google’s $12.5 billion bid for Motorola Mobility ("Google's bid for Motorola means play for many patents"). Mr. Patras explained how patents can play a pivotal role in the mobile device market. Google’s recent involvement in several patent infringement cases was most likely due to its weak patent portfolio and inability to fend off attacks from major, high-tech competitors. As Google acquires a portfolio of nearly 17,000 patents and nearly 7,500 pending patent applications, it could become a major contender in the mobile device market.
Mr. Patras has extensive experience in all aspects of patent infringement litigation. He has tried patent infringement cases in federal court, as well as in the arbitration setting. Mr. Patras also counsels clients on intellectual property rights, including providing patent and trademark infringement and validity opinions. He is admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and has drafted and prosecuted dozens of patents.
