Janis Meyer was quoted by Corporate Counsel Magazine in an article titled "GC Resigns Amid Corruption Probe in Cleveland." The article reported on the resignation of a general counsel as part of an internal corruption investigation involving her spouse, who, according to the article, did business with her employer.
To avoid such a situation, Meyer said corporate counsel should disclose any such relationship to their employer, make sure that they are not involved at all in the matter at issue and make a record.
"Say to whoever it is that you report to, 'I am not going to take any role whatsoever in this.' And also isolate yourself to the extent you can to avoid ending up in this situation," she added. "You also have to make sure that your spouse understands that as well."
