Hinshaw attorney Vincent Rizzo was among a group of twelve attorneys profiled by Law360, as part of the publication's Diversity Snapshot series. In the article – headlined by former Attorney General of the United States Loretta Lynch – the attorneys discuss how their diverse backgrounds have proved to be an asset in their legal work. The attorneys profiled were selected from more than 100 attorneys who submitted anecdotes for the series.
In his profile, Vincent tells a story about how his perspective as an LGBTQ employment defense attorney proved beneficial to his client during the voir dire process of a jury trial.
"One example of when my perspective as an LGBTQ employment defense attorney benefitted my client was during a jury trial. When my client suggested we make a preemptory challenge to a LGBTQ juror during voir dire, I asked my client to express their neutral explanation for the challenge. While the client initially did not think the challenge was based on the juror’s LGBTQ status, upon reflection the client realized there was no neutral explanation. By questioning the client’s suggestion, the client avoided a possible Batson challenge and embarrassment in front of the court."
