Hinshaw made its presence known as a gold sponsor of the recently concluded General Counsel Conference Midwest 2024 (GCCM) in Chicago. The Legal Speak podcast was on location, interviewing several event faculty, including Hinshaw partner Vaishali Rao. In addition, Corporate Counsel magazine filed a report on the conference, focusing on Rao's panel—which also included Sandra Talbott of the U.S. Department of Justice and Mary McCarthy of United Airlines.
In the podcast, Rao spoke about the work the firm's regulatory compliance practice performs on behalf of clients, including responding to government investigations and providing proactive compliance advice. She also discussed the focus of her GCCM panel, the importance of establishing a corporate compliance framework, and the significance of ongoing legal challenges to the long-standing Chevron doctrine of judicial deference to agency interpretation of statutory authority.

Corporate Counsel focused on Rao's panel "Behind the Curtain: The Regulators Perspective for 2024 and Beyond." Fellow panelist Talbott of the Department of Justice (DOJ) noted how several states have stepped up their antitrust enforcement and said the DOJ takes a "very broad approach to criminal enforcement."
Rao added that many small businesses operate under the misconception that they do not have much to worry about regarding regulatory frameworks. However, broadened antitrust enforcement and greater focus on things such as noncompete agreements have the potential for more companies to come under scrutiny and get a subpoena. When confronting government scrutiny, "A lot of time it feels like a surprise, like, 'Why would we be targeted?'" said Rao.
Hinshaw's John Ryan, Cathy Mulrow-Peattie, and Bessie Daschbach also attended the GCCM.
