Bob Hogeboom and Sam Sorich authored an article titled "COVID-19 and California Wildfires Issues," published in the Fall 2020 issue of the Federation of Regulatory Counsel's Journal of Insurance Law and Regulation. In the piece, Hogeboom and Sorich provide their takeaways from two presentations at a July 2020 American Property Casualty Insurance Association seminar: (1) "What COVID-19 Means for the Property/Casualty Insurance Industry" and (2) "(Mostly) Non-COVID-19 California Insurance Litigation and Regulatory Update," which featured Hinshaw partner Spencer Kook as a co-presenter.
As to the COVID-19 presentation, Hogeboom and Sorich cover developments on a wide range of insurance lines, including business interruption, event cancellation, travel, general liability, auto and homeowners, and directors & officers. They also recap insights they gained from the presenters as to COVID-19-related California Department of Insurance (CDI) bulletins and notices, and actions taken since their issuance, including as to virus exclusions, rate filings, and premium refunds.
With regard to the "(Mostly) Non-Covid-19 California Insurance Litigation and Regulatory Update" presentation, Hogeboom and Sorich address presentation takeaways on subjects such as the CDI Commissioner's COVID-19 premium refund orders, California's wildfires of the last few years and the 2019 Commissioner Wildfire Non-Renewal Moratorium, the CID's attempt to expand the California's Fair Plan (the market of last resort for "basic property insurance"), pending homeowners insurance availability-related bills in the California legislature (AB 2167 and SB 292), and super group exemptions.
"COVID-19 and California Wildfires Issues" was published in the Fall 2020 issue of the Federation of Regulatory Counsel's Journal of Insurance Law and Regulation.
