Hinshaw partner and Chair of Hinshaw's Appellate Practice Group, Gretchen Harris Sperry, was quoted in two recent Law360 articles titled "Ill. To Elect High Court Justices With First New Map Since 1964" and "Open Ill. High Court Race Attracts Some Atypical Candidates." The articles discuss the upcoming Illinois Supreme Court election in which Illinois voters will elect justices based on a newly redrawn district map. "This is an entirely unique and almost ... once-in-a-lifetime election," she said.
Partisan control of the Court will hinge on the outcome of elections in the newly redrawn Second and Third Districts. "Even one new justice on a [seven-member] court .. obviously changes the dynamic considerably. It ... changes the approach, the points of agreement, the styles, and ultimately in some cases, the decisions or the reasoning for them," said Sperry.
Sperry also emphasizes the significance of the role played by the intermediate appellate courts, noting that Illinois' high court only takes about three to five percent of the petitions submitted, meaning most cases are fully resolved at the appellate level.
