Liljestrand, a Chicago-based partner in the Product Liability practice area at Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP, authored the article, "Routine Joinder Of Big Tobacco May Become Trend In Asbestos Cases," published by the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin on October 7, 2015. This article is part of Mr. Liljestrand's monthly column with the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin "Toxic Tort Talk."
The article discuses the court case, Stidham v. RJ. Reynolds Tobacco Co., 2015 WL 5076895 (Md. Ct. Spec. App., Aug. 27, 2015), where the Maryland Court of Special Appeals dismissed a plaintiff's appeal as moot, but provided some interesting guidance on the joinder of asbestos and tobacco defendants to the same case. Mr. Liljestrand explains in the article that the plaintiff filed his original lung cancer suit against numerous asbestos defendants, and later amended the complaint by adding several tobacco defendants. The tobacco defendants moved to dismiss the amended complaint.
