The career of former Hinshaw partner Tom Sukowicz, who retired from law practice at the end of last year, was recently profiled by Sarah Mansur of the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin. Sukowicz was a long-time member of the Hinshaw Lawyers for the Profession® practice group, a team dedicated to representing and advising lawyers and law firms on all aspects of the "law governing lawyers."
Sukowicz describes how he began working at the Illinois Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission (ARDC) while a law student, and found legal ethics issues to be "very interesting" and a "really rich area." After working at the ARDC for five years, he joined Hinshaw as an associate in 1990, and following another stint at the ARDC, worked at Hinshaw for the past 18 years.
Hinshaw's Tom McGarry, who worked closely with Sukowicz, said his colleague found enormous professional satisfaction in "counseling, advising, [and] writing about ethics and discipline." McGarry and Sukowicz are co-authors of the first and only ARDC practice manual "Attorney Discipline Proceedings: Illinois Practice and Procedure," published by the Law Bulletin press.
Hinshaw's Matthew Henderson added that Sukowicz had "great knowledge" of the inner workings of the ARDC, and was an excellent resource for other colleagues seeking advice.
McGarry said his longtime colleague will be missed, but will remain only a phone call away. "We will miss his selfless nature and his rich perspective of having worked both as disciplinarian and respondents' counsel, but I do have him on my speed dial, just in case."
