Hinshaw partner Anthony Torrente recently discussed in the Daily Business Review the inspiration behind his winning Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's "Man of the Year" philanthropic competition. Over the course of a ten-week campaign, Torrente raised over $22,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
Torrente said his campaign was inspired by his cousin Loriana Hernandez's battle with leukemia. "When I was a kid, I always looked up to my cousin. She had an incredible talent and had to put her career on pause. When you hear about someone you really love who has a disease, it makes you break down. When you see someone you love going through something so tough," he said.
Torrente also noted the challenges of managing the time commitment to fundraising for the campaign, while also maintaining his busy practice as a partner in Hinshaw's Product Liability Practice Group. He explained how he would blocked out 90 minutes a day to work on the campaign, sometimes around lunch but usually after he ended his workday. The fundraising literally did not stop "until a minute before they presented the award," he added.
Torrente has since joined the leadership committee and is set to be involved in nominating the next "Man of the Year," as well as "Woman of the Year," to continue the effort to raise tax-deductible donations to find a cure for the disease. The committee picks who is most suitable for the nomination, which consists of two males and three females.
