Anthony Davis and Steve Puiszis authored a column in The New York Law Journal titled "The EU General Data Protection Regulation: Why it Matters Here." In the article, Davis and Puiszis consider the potential application to U.S. law firms of the EU General Data Privacy Regulation (GDPR), which goes into effect on May 25, 2018.
The authors describe how the GDPR is focused on privacy and security of personal data, with potentially significant penalties for noncompliance. They further describe how law firms do not need to have an office in the EU or even set foot in the EU to be potentially subject to the GDPR. They conclude with a review of the provisions of the GDPR and provide a checklist of steps law firms should take before the law goes into effect.
