Hinshaw attorney Vaishali S. Rao, a Chicago-based partner in the Consumer Financial Services group, will serve as the Chair of the newly-created Regulatory and Compliance Committee of the Chicago Bar Association (CBA). With regulatory uncertainty and compliance costs skyrocketing and impacting business operations across industry sectors, the CBA established the new committee in order to bring together regulatory attorneys and experts in the industry, facilitate educational updates regarding significant regulatory trends and share compliance counseling best practices.
While Washington DC is the hub of federal regulatory activity, there are many regulatory and compliance practitioners operating in Chicago and throughout Illinois. The new CBA committee is tailored to meet the needs of these professionals. The committee will include compliance attorneys, compliance counseling consultants, and in house counsel. John F. Costello, Jr of J.P. Morgan Chase, will serve as Committee Vice-Chair.
"Bringing together regulatory & compliance professionals in the Chicago area has not been done before," said Vaishali Rao, a former Assistant Attorney General in Attorney General Madigan's Consumer Protection division. "Each practitioner brings a unique perspective in finding creative solutions to common problems. The CBA provides an excellent forum to share that wealth of experience in order to service the needs of our clients and businesses most effectively. Both John and I are looking forward to a successful first year by advancing the goals of the committee with a robust schedule this fall, and we invite both CBA members and non-members to join us."
The committee’s first meeting will be held Sept. 19 and it will meet every third Tuesday of the month from September to June. The first committee meeting will be a planning session to hear from members of the regulatory & compliance community about topics they find important and relevant to their practice.
Future meetings include presentations and discussion on topics like, Room for Everyone: RegTech & the Regular Lawyer; Privilege in Compliance Audits; and Innovative Ways to Deal with Consumer Complaints. Committee meeting participation is free and CLE credit is provided.
