Chicago — Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn named Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP Partner, Sergio E. Acosta, to serve on the state’s Concealed Carry Licensing Review Board. Acosta was appointed to represent the interests of residents of the 2nd District of Illinois, which includes the west suburbs and north and northwestern Illinois.
A resident of Elmhurst, Illinois, Mr. Acosta brings to the Concealed Carry Licensing Review Board a broad range of experience. Mr. Acosta previously served as the former Chief of the General Crimes Section of the Criminal Division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois. He also served as Assistant State Attorney in Miami, Florida, where he was Chief of the Felony Division. Furthermore, in 2011, Mr. Acosta was named by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel to serve on the City of Chicago's Ethics Reform Task Force.
The seven-member panel of the Concealed Carry Licensing Review Board also includes former federal prosecutors, FBI agents and judges. The board will be tasked with considering any objection to an applicant's eligibility to obtain a license submitted by a law enforcement agency or the Department of State Police. "These appointees to the state's Concealed Carry Licensing Review Board are highly qualified and committed individuals," Governor Quinn said in a press release. "They represent communities across Illinois and they will carry out their duties diligently to protect public safety."
The initial appointments by Governor Quinn — set for a term that ends January 2015 — are still subject to Senate confirmation.
Mr. Acosta is an experienced criminal and appellate litigator and investigator. He has represented companies, government entities and individuals in matters involving the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, complex financial fraud, criminal tax violations, export regulations and criminal forfeiture. Mr. Acosta’s practice also encompasses corporate governance, corporate internal investigations, regulatory enforcement, commercial litigation and gaming law.
Mr. Acosta earned his J.D. from George Washington University School of Law (1985) and a B.A. from DePaul University (1982).
