Sergio Acosta Receives Award From U.S. Department of Justice for Work on Jon Burge Prosecution

Sergio E. Acosta, a Partner in the Chicago office of Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP and a member of the firm's White Collar Crime Group, has been awarded a U.S. Department of Justice Director's Award for Superior Performance for his prosecution work as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Illinois in United States v. Jon Burge. Mr. Acosta, former Chief of the General Crimes Section and the office's Criminal Civil Rights Coordinator, oversaw the indictment of former police officer Jon Burge, who was convicted of perjury related to police torture allegations dating back more than 30 years. Mr. Acosta was honored along with other recipients at the Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys Director's Awards Ceremony in Washington, D.C., on December 9, 2011.
Mr. Acosta represents individuals and businesses in white collar crime, corporate governance, corporate investigations, regulatory enforcement and gaming law. He has worked in concert with many state and federal agencies, including the U.S. Department of Justice, Internal Revenue Service, Illinois Department of Revenue, Illinois State Police and all of the federal law enforcement agencies. A highly experienced public servant, Mr. Acosta has held high-level positions in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Illinois and the Dade County (Florida) State Attorney's Office. He also served as Administrator of the Illinois Gaming Board.
