Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP today announced that Peter N. Cubita has joined the firm’s Consumer Financial Services practice as a senior counsel in New York. Previously a Vice President and Senior Legal Director at Goldman Sachs Bank USA, he has more than four decades of experience in a wide range of consumer financial services matters, including regulatory compliance, transactions, class action litigation, and government investigations and enforcement matters.
“Peter is among the preeminent and most experienced consumer financial services attorneys in the country,” said Brian McGrath, the co-practice group leader of the firm’s consumer financial services group. “He is widely well-regarded for his ability to identify potential regulatory and business risks, and for helping financial services companies avoid legal issues through creative problem-solving. We all look forward to working with him and continuing to provide top-level service to our clients.”
At Hinshaw, Cubita advises financial services companies on a wide range of consumer finance products, including credit cards, installment loans, point-of-sale financing, auto finance, and consumer leasing, and the federal and state regulatory frameworks governing them across their product life cycles.
He helped develop the first generation of retail installment sales and retail leasing agreements for a leading captive auto finance company. A skilled advocate, Cubita has also successfully represented clients in connection with appeals that resulted in seminal appellate decisions.
“I’ve long admired Hinshaw’s talented Consumer Financial Services group and the collaborative approach they take to servicing their clients and building their practice,” Cubita said. “I worked previously with Hinshaw partner Michael Guerrero and am very happy to have an opportunity to work closely with him again, as well as the other members of the team.”
Prior to joining Goldman Sachs USA, Cubita practiced law at Davis, Wright, Tremaine LLP, Ballard Spahr LLP, Ally Financial Inc., and Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP. He received a B.A., summa cum laude, from Iona College and a J.D. from St. John’s University School of Law. He is a member of the American Bar Association Committee on Consumer Financial Services, the Governing Committee of the Conference on Consumer Finance Law, and a fellow of the American College of Consumer Financial Services Lawyers.
“Peter has been a mentor and someone for whom I have enormous respect,” Guerrero said. “He is one of the most knowledgeable consumer financial services attorneys in the country, and his addition is a wonderful complement to our existing bench of legal talent. Our clients are excited that he has joined the Hinshaw team. We look forward to working with him as we continue expanding our practice.”
