The U.S. law firm Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP is pleased to announce that Mitchel C. Chargo, partner and head of the firm's Cannabis Law Committee, was named by Cannabis Law Report to the Fourth Edition Global Top 200 Cannabis Lawyers 2023/2024 list.
The Top 200 Cannabis Lawyers is compiled from an annual survey of clients and lawyers in the cannabis legal sector and is a resource for entities seeking to source cannabis, hemp, and CBD legal practitioners in the jurisdiction they wish to do business.
Chargo represents clients in a wide array of matters related to the state of Minnesota's newly enacted adult recreational use cannabis program, including regulatory and compliance matters, licensing, financing, commercial real estate, and corporate governance. He also represents a Native American entity in a Native American medicinal cannabis program and adult recreational use program, as well as clients in the hemp industry, including manufacturers of hemp products.
Prior to Hinshaw, Chargo was in-house general counsel for one of Minnesota's two state-registered medical cannabis manufacturers. He handled regulatory and compliance matters for the company, including its registration renewal application, the company’s corporate matters, and commercial real estate matters, including municipal and zoning matters related to opening dispensaries in local jurisdictions, while at the same time managing the company’s outside counsel.
He played a key role in advancing the cannabis industry in Minnesota and worked on amendments to Minnesota legislation and administrative regulations related to medical cannabis.
In addition to his cannabis practice, Chargo has nearly three decades of experience in commercial real estate and business transactions, advising companies in commercial real estate loan transactions, acquisitions and dispositions, and leasing retail, office, industrial and multi-family properties. He advises clients in corporate and business transactions related to the purchase and disposition of non-real estate asset classes, executive employment agreements, commercial contract review, and compliance.
Chargo is actively involved in civic organizations and serves as president of The Institute for Holocaust Research and Education, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting knowledge and information about the Holocaust and antisemitism in order to inspire successive generations to recognize and combat intolerance, discrimination, and injustice in all forms. He is a member of the International Cannabis Bar Association, the Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics, the Minnesota State Bar Association, and the State Bar of Arizona.
