Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP's Chicago office was recently the scene of a diversity and inclusion event titled "A Different Kind of D&I Discussion" facilitated by 2nd Story, an award-winning live-lit organization that can simultaneously build community and address sensitive issues through performance. Diversity & Inclusion Partner, D.L. Morriss collaborated with 2nd Story Artistic Director, Amanda Delheimer to curate a show exclusively for Hinshaw, speaking to the themes of racial microaggressions and toxic masculinity. Hinshaw attorneys heard two expertly crafted stories written and performed by 2nd Story company members, McKenzie Chinn and Nicholas Ward. In addition, the stories were accompanied with music by the Salcedo Group. Afterward, attorneys engaged with one another and had the opportunity to share their own personal experiences regarding the themes that arose from the stories just heard. The evening provided a unique opportunity for discovery and discussion.
"Overall, we learned that relationships are foundational to diversity discussions," said Diversity & Inclusion Partner D.L. Morriss. "Championing the personal narratives of others, even if we don't fully understand them or haven’t experienced them ourselves, is key to building an inclusive culture."
