The law firm of Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP is pleased to announce that partner Catherine Basque Weiler has been elected as a Fellow of the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers (AAAL). She will be formally inducted at the AAAL Spring Meeting in New Orleans.
Membership in the Academy is by invitation only and limited to 500 Fellows nationwide. Hinshaw partner Joshua Vincent is also an AAAL Fellow.
Weiler joined the firm in December 2023 and currently serves as the chair of the firm's appellate practice. Formerly the head of the appellate and critical motions practice at a Chicago-based boutique litigation firm, Weiler has almost two decades of experience handling significant civil appellate matters and critical motions in state and federal courts.
She represents companies through all phases of the trial and appellate process. She has presented oral arguments to numerous courts of appeal, including the Illinois Supreme Court, the Seventh Circuit, and all districts of the Illinois Appellate Court. She has also briefed matters before several federal appellate circuit courts and state courts of appeal, including in California, North Carolina, Missouri, Indiana, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Texas, and Colorado.
The AAAL was founded in 1990 to recognize outstanding appellate lawyers and promote the improvement of appellate advocacy and the administration of the appellate courts.
Weiler began her law practice as an assistant Illinois attorney general in the Civil Appeals Division. She received her B.A. from the University of Notre Dame and her J.D. from Loyola University Chicago School of Law.
In addition to her law practice, Weiler is actively involved in professional organizations. She is the current vice president of the Illinois Appellate Lawyers Association and will become president in June. She is also a member of the Seventh Circuit Bar Association, the Chicago Inn of Court, the Illinois State Bar Association, and the Notre Dame Alumni Association.
