Yvonne Ocrant — the Chicago-based leader of the Equine Law Practice at Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP — authored the article "Three Days Three Ways One Law: Know the Equine Activity Liability Law and Minimize Your Risk of Liability" published by Eventing USA. In the piece, Ocrant gives an overview of the Equine Activity Liability Act.
"No one is completely immune from liability risks," Ocrant said, "especially in the horse industry." She goes on to address the statute's purpose; who the law protects; who qualifies as a participant engaged in an equine activity; the assumed inherent risks of engaging in equine activities; and whether the statute offers an absolute liability protection. Ocrant encourages professionals, equine activity sponsors and other qualifying individuals to understand and apply the law using "common sense, putting safety first, seeking professional legal advice before the problems arise or shortly thereafter and always remembering to have fun in the process."
