Hinshaw partner Jason Oliveri authored an article published in the March 2026 edition of Cyber Defense Magazine examining the cybersecurity risks organizations face when deploying AI agents that handle protected health information (PHI).
Jason highlights a critical vulnerability for healthcare entities to be aware of: specifically, AI agents accessing, disclosing, and processing sensitive health data without human oversight. When compromised, these agents can be impersonated by attackers who may insert maliciously altered data – exposing vendors, clinical research subjects, and patients to significant harm.
Jason concludes with a compliance and risk management checklist for healthcare organizations to safeguard their AI agents. He also notes that many of these best practices may soon become regulatory requirements under proposed updates to the HIPAA Security Rule.
