Chicago — Daniel M. Purdom, a Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP Partner was quoted in a November 4, 2013 Mainstreet.com in the article "Medicare Fraud: The Dirty Truth."
The article discusses the various forms of Medicare fraud and the impact that it has on the victim's, government and insurance companies. The article goes further into discussing the different ways the crimes are set up and how it affects the healthcare systems and government, as well as discusses the massive compliance and regulatory changes to fight Medicare fraud and how the Office of the Inspector General is taking steps to combat fraud as well.
Mr. Purdom discusses and lists the various ways that Medicare fraud crimes are set up. He mentions a few examples such as how "Providers can bill for services never rendered" and "...billing for unnecessary procedures." Mr. Purdom also discusses how Medicare fraud affects the government and taxpayers. He says, "When Healthcare providers are cheated, and the government has to pick up the tab, that drives up the price of everything, including hospital and insurance costs." He mentions as well how the government has dramatically changed compliance and regulation policies to fight Medicare fraud.
