Hinshaw partner Cathy Mulrow-Peattie was quoted in a recent Bank Info Security article examining the impact of a cyberattack on medical device manufacturer Stryker by an Iranian hacker group.
The group, which carried out a destructive wiper attack against Stryker, claimed on its website to have exfiltrated “critical data” and permanently erased devices and Stryker data that “took years to collect and billions of dollars to protect.”
Cathy highlights the growing threat posed by state-sponsored cyber operations for technology supply chain providers for US critical infrastructure companies, such as healthcare, financial services, and more. “Iran has specifically mentioned that U.S. technology providers are within its targets, and it has used similar destructive cyber techniques in the past,” she said. “This means that disaster [resilient] recovery and business continuity systems are even more critical as a defense and a way to stay in business.”
While not included in the article, Cathy advises clients that if security threats evolve, an organization’s cybersecurity defensive measures should be adapted. She counsels clients to review critical third-party supply chain contracts and Incident Response Plans in this charged cybersecurity environment, as regulators will expect that, as security risks change, so do an organization’s risk defenses.
