Anthony E. Davis, was quoted in a November–December 2013 National Magazine article titled "Diligent When Hiring." National Magazine, the official publication of the Canadian Bar Association, covers the latest trends and developments affecting the legal profession and the practice of law.
The article discusses lateral hiring within law firms and the different problems firms can encounter. It talks about these problems and offers suggestions to mitigate risk when laterally hiring attorneys. The article goes further in discussing some of the not so obvious risks firms may want to look at before laterally hiring.
Mr. Davis discusses mistakes and suggestions that firms can make to help them when hiring. Mr. Davis notes "Some of the biggest mistakes are made when laterals are rushed in and there's inadequate due diligence, integration and supervision." Mr. Davis lists common problems like poor conflict-checking and people claiming greater credentials. He also recommends centralizing the hiring process and notes "it's becoming more common to do a full-fledged personality test." Mr. Davis also suggests exploring candidates financials and information they have that your firm may not be entitled to.
