Hinshaw Partner Tom Kuzmanovic to Serve as Guest Speaker at ABA International Courts Committee Meeting

Hinshaw partner Tom Kuzmanovic will speak at the ABA International Courts Committee's monthly meeting taking place on Wednesday, November 11, 2015, regarding the appeal of General Mladen Markač before the Appeals Chamber of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague, Netherlands. Gen. Markač was the Assistant Minister of Interior and Commander of Special Police (equivalent to Special Forces) in Croatia in 1995 who was sentenced to 18 years of imprisonment by the ICTY's Trial Chamber for allegedly committing crimes against humanity and violations of the laws or customs of war from August to September 1995. Mr. Kuzmanovic began his representation of Gen. Markač in 2007. The trial began in March 2008 and was completed in August 2010. Gen. Markač was acquitted on all charges when the Appeals verdict was rendered in November 2012.
The ABA International Court Committee provides information and commentary on the work of a wide range of international courts and tribunals, from the International Court of Justice to investor-state arbitration tribunals. The Committee's focus is on both the substantive and procedural aspects of international decision-making. On substance, the committee works to inform the legal community and the public about the significance of international judgments and awards. On procedure, the committee monitors and reports on key changes in the development of international rules of procedure and on issues such as the winding down of international courts.
