John De Filippis focuses his practice on complex casualty insurance coverage matters involving commercial general liability, commercial auto, pollution liability, construction defect, employer liability, and professional liability (insurance brokers and medical professionals) insurance. John has extensive experience with occurrence-based and claims-made coverages; primary, excess and umbrella policies; and owner and contractor controlled insurance programs. He has prosecuted and defended many declaratory judgment actions in New York State and Federal Courts, and has successfully litigated cases addressing time-on-the-risk allocations, priority of coverage, applicability of policy terms and conditions, the viability of particular policy exclusions, and many other issues.
In addition to insurance coverage litigation, John has managed litigation counsel and handled related coverage matters for a client’s multi-state construction insurance program, and has been involved in drafting and revising various liability insurance policy forms and endorsements for clients.
John also counsels several emerging corporations on risk management, statutory and legal compliance, commercial real estate leasing, employment contracts, general drafting and revision of agreements, and litigation strategy.
Prior to joining Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP, John practiced in the New York office of a national firm litigating complex insurance coverage and commercial matters for domestic and international insurance companies. During law school, John was a member of the Cardozo Law Review, and he also spent nearly two years working with The Innocent Project.
