Susan Kusper focuses her practice in labor and employment law, with particular emphasis in complex employment litigation. She works with employers, human resources personnel, and in-house counsel in matters involving Title VII, ADA, ADEA, FMLA, Section 1981, Section 1983, the Illinois Human Rights Act, wage and hour disputes, trade secret disputes, workers' compensation retaliation and non-compete claims. She represents clients in state and federal courts, as well as before a number of administrative agencies, including the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Illinois Human Rights Commission, the Missouri Commission on Human Rights, the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development and the Illinois Department of Labor. She is involved in all phases of the litigation process, from initial fact investigation to trial.

In addition, Ms. Kusper regularly counsels and advises clients with respect to handbooks and other personnel policies, with a particular focus on national and state employee background and credit check requirements.

In addition to her employment practice, Ms. Kusper has experience in traditional labor and school law matters.  This includes representing employers in grievance and labor arbitrations and proceedings before the National Labor Relations Board and Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board.

Professional Background

Prior to joining Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP, Ms. Kusper served as the primary labor and employment associate at another Chicago firm, representing management clients in all aspects of litigation.

During law school, Ms. Kusper served as a judicial intern to the Honorable Ronald A. Guzmán, U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. She also clerked at a number of Chicago firms.

In addition to her other law school accomplishments, Ms. Kusper was a semi-finalist on the Wagner National Labor and Employment Law Moot Court Team and served as an executive editor on the Loyola University Chicago Law Journal. She received CALI awards for the highest grades in Advocacy (Appellate Litigation), Business Organizations, Property and Advanced Litigation Skills, and was honored for receiving the highest grade in Contracts. She is a recipient of an Honors-at-Entrance Scholarship and the Judge Loretta C. Douglas Endowed Merit Scholarship.
