Brittney Cato focuses her practice in consumer financial services with particular emphasis on the defense of claims brought under a number of state and federal consumer laws, including the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA). Ms. Cato researches and drafts motions, and is involved in all phases of the litigation process.

Professional Background

Prior to joining Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP as an associate in October 2016, Ms. Cato was a law clerk with the firm since 2015. Each year Hinshaw awards a scholarship, as well as a summer associate position, to a diverse second-year law student with exceptional academic credentials at DePaul College of Law as part of the firm's DePaul Diversity Scholarship. Ms. Cato received this scholarship and was a summer associate at the firm in 2015.

In addition to her other law school accomplishments, Ms. Cato graduated in the top 15% of her law school class and was inducted into the Order of the Barrister. She was a member of the Dean's List. Ms. Cato was a recipient of multiple Dean's Scholarships in addition to Hinshaw's DePaul Diversity Scholarship. She was a member of the Black Law Student Association Mock Trial Team, and she participated in the 2015 Thurgood Marshall Midwest Regional Mock Trial Competition, where she received the Outstanding Advocate Award. Ms. Cato was selected for the Intellectual Property Legal Analysis Research and Communication Section, and completed the lecture series "An Introduction to IP Theory and Practice." She received CALI Awards for Criminal Law and Intellectual Property Licensing and Drafting, and served as a teaching assistant for First-Year Contracts.

Ms. Cato is proficient in conversational and written Spanish.

Prior to her legal career, Ms. Cato was a basketball coach to high school and elementary school athletes.
