September 21, 2015
Room 10 - Professional Development Alliance, 2705 McDonough Street, Joliet, Illinois 60436

Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP partner Kathryn S. Vander Broek will participate in a panel discussion titled "Here, There and Everywhere — What to Do With School Student Records and Visitors to the Schools" at a Professional Development Alliance program from 9:00–11:30 a.m.

This seminar will help attendees to identify what constitutes a school student record and understand the maintenance and destruction rules governing those records. The panel also will review confidentiality laws affecting school records and what they dictate in terms of when and how school records may be released. These laws include the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the Illinois School Student Records Act, HIPAA, the Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Confidentiality Act and more. Finally the panel will touch on the role of school secretaries in greeting and screening visitors to the schools and tools the law and board policies provide to assist with this task.
