Yano Rubinstein leads Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP’s California intellectual property practice. He counsels clients on patent, trademark, and copyright matters.
Mr. Rubinstein practices in state and federal courts on litigated matters, and has extensive experience in cancellation and opposition proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, domain name disputes under the Uniform Domain Name Resolution Policy, and right of publicity and unfair competition claims.
Mr. Rubinstein counsels his clients on intellectual property acquisition and procurement, licensing, clearance and royalty provisions. He also manages worldwide intellectual property portfolios on behalf of his clients.
Mr. Rubinstein’s practice is local, regional and international in scope, and his clients include a host of uniquely successful organizations in the fields of technology, art and culture, entertainment, publishing, wineries, retail, entertainment venues and sports.

- Trial counsel for a leading provider of cross-platform media asset management solutions in claims of copyright infringement.
- Trial counsel for a software provider in a computer fraud and abuse case.
- Outside general counsel for a cosmetics company, advising on disputed trademark rights, brand procurement and corporate matters.
- Trademark counsel for wineries and restaurants, advising on branding, trademark and franchising activities.
- Outside general counsel for a mobile networking startup whose staff he assisted in developing a comprehensive worldwide intellectual property program.
- Intellectual property counsel for a Germany-based software company, assisting in creating a portfolio of trademarks and patents.
Mr. Rubinstein joined Hinshaw in May 2009. Previously he was the founder and principal of Rubinstein Law Group, P.C., in San Francisco. Prior to that, he was previously with the law firms of Oppenheimer, Wolff and Donnelley LLP and Perkins Coie LLP.
Mr. Rubinstein was the recipient of a CALI Award for Federal Income Taxation, and an American Jurisprudence Award for Legal Writing in law school. He was also a member of the Jewish student union, participated in the Legal Intern Program, and taught abroad in Beijing, China.
Mr. Rubinstein is a member of the Intellectual Property and Litigation sections of the California State Bar. He is also a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association and the International Trademark Association.
He currently serves as an Arbitrator for the Bar Association of San Francisco’s Fee Dispute Program.
Mr. Rubinstein speaks frequently on intellectual property and other issues, and is often a guest presenter for a number of Bay Area businesses.
Mr. Rubinstein serves as general counsel for the Kerosene Lamp Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by professional NBA player Adonal Foyle, which promotes education and health awareness for children.
He is active in the community and regularly provides pro-bono services to those in need.
