Steven E. Seward

Practice Focus
Steven Seward devotes his practice to representing debtors, lenders and other parties-in-interest in proceedings under Chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code and out-of-court workouts. He also litigates in connection with these matters when necessary.

Mr. Seward prosecutes and defends adversary proceedings in bankruptcy court. He has litigated a variety of commercial matters in state and federal court. In addition, Mr. Seward represents court appointed receivers for distressed real estate assets in foreclosure, including serving as counsel to the receiver for eight residential communities securing a $105 million loan to a bankrupt home builder. In that case, Mr. Seward prosecuted and successfully settled homeowner association claims against the debtor and helped to create a procedure for the sale of homes free and clear of liens, which resulted in the sale of $8 million in real property to partially satisfy the lender’s claims.
Professional Background
Mr. Seward joined Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP in December 2009. Previously he was for two years an associate at Weissman, Dervishi, Borgo & Nordlund, P.A., a litigation boutique in Miami, where he focused his practice in receiverships, bankruptcy matters and commercial litigation. From 2006 to 2007, he was a law clerk to the Honorable Paul G. Hyman, Chief Judge of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Mr. Seward is a cum laude graduate of the University of Miami School of Law, where he graduated in the top 13 percent of his law school class. He was a member of the law review and served as Writing & Research Editor during his final year of law school. Mr. Seward was a member of the Dean’s List, and was a Zbar Scholar. In addition, he received two Book Awards, one for corporate finance and the other for a bankruptcy reorganization seminar.

He is a member of The Florida Bar, American Bankruptcy Institute, Federal Bar Association and the Bankruptcy Bar Association for the Southern District of Florida.

Mr. Seward is a co-author of “Using Receiverships to Maximize the Value of Distressed Assets,” which appeared in 83 Fla. Bar. J. 11, at page 8 (December 2009). He is also the author of “A World of Evergreen Fees? In re Pan American Hospital and Evergreen Retainers in Chapter 11 Reorganizations,” a note in 60 U. Miami L. Rev. 399 (2006).
