Patrick F. Koenen is a trial attorney who handles a variety of complex tort, professional liability and commercial cases. He has tried to verdict more than 50 lawsuits in both the state and federal court systems, and has substantial appellate experience.
Early in his career, Mr. Koenen investigated, evaluated and tried cases involving claims of personal injuries and property damage arising from automobile and truck accidents, plane crashes, construction site accidents and the use of products.
While Mr. Koenen continues to handle many large tort cases, his litigation experience now also includes the representation of medical doctors, hospitals, chiropractors, attorneys, insurance agents and other professionals facing claims of malpractice or disciplinary actions against their licenses.
As a result of his extensive work in the health care area, Mr. Koenen frequently provides advice to clinics, hospitals and health care systems on risk avoidance techniques and compliance with both state and federal regulations.
Mr. Koenen is the Partner-in-Charge of Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP’s Appleton, Wisconsin, office. He is a Co-Leader of the firm’s Defense Litigation Practice Group and a member of its Health Care Practice Group.

- Kasnia v. Northwest Airlines, Inc., Case No. 87-CV-1133, U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Wisconsin (1990). Wrongful death lawsuit arising out of a March 4, 1987, crash of a Northwest Airlines aircraft in Detroit, Michigan. Defense verdict on liability.
- Wilson v. Traylor Brothers, Inc., Case No. 92-CV-3597, Milwaukee County (1994). Personal injury claim by a worker involved in the construction of the deep tunnel sewer system in the City of Milwaukee. Defense verdict on liability.
- Fischer v. Chiro-Health Chiropractic Care, 96-CV-330, Sheboygan County (1997). Chiropractic malpractice claim by a patient alleging a chiropractic adjustment caused neurological injuries to the cervical spine resulting in multiple surgeries and disability. Defense verdict on liability.
- Goehe v. Montezon Insurance & Real Estate, 95-CV-5, Vilas County (1997). E&O claim by a business owner alleging an insurance agent failed to procure adequate property and business loss coverage for an automobile dealership destroyed by a fire. Defense verdict on liability.
- Scheberle v. Milson, M.D., 01-CV-345, Brown County (2003). Medical malpractice claim alleging a surgeon dissected a cranial nerve during a lymph node biopsy resulting in significant injury and disability. Defense verdict on liability.
- Paffenroth v. C.H. Koch Plumbing & Heating, Inc., 05-CV-358, Winnebago County (2006). Personal injury claim by an elderly woman alleging improper installation of water heater caused severe burns and other injuries. Defense verdict on liability.
- Johnson v. Chung, M.D., 04-CV-1929, Brown County (2006). Medical malpractice claim asserting a physician caused a staph infection while administering trigger-point injections for pain relief resulting in a bilateral amputation of the patient’s legs below the knee. Defense verdict on liability.
- Constantini v. ProAssurance, 06-CV-2014, Brown County (2010). Medical malpractice claim alleging a general surgeon negligently performed a laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication resulting in substantial gastrointestinal injuries, including the removal of the patient’s stomach. Defense verdict on liability.

Mr. Koenen joined Hinshaw in January 1988 as an associate in the firm’s Milwaukee office. In April 1996, he moved to Appleton, Wisconsin, to become the Partner-in-Charge of that office, a position he continues to hold. He is a past member of the firm’s Executive Committee and was a regional director of the firm’s Wisconsin and Minnesota offices before taking on a leadership role in the Defense Litigation Practice Group.
Mr. Koenen’s professional memberships reflect the facets of his practice. He is a member of the State Bar of Wisconsin, the Outagamie County Bar Association, Wisconsin Defense Counsel, Defense Research Institute, American Health Lawyers Association and the Health Law Section of the Wisconsin Bar Association.

Mr. Koenen is the author of an award-winning article for the International Association of Insurance Counsel on the topic of third-party bad faith.

Mr. Koenen contributes a significant amount of time to local community development and charities. He is a member of the Board of Directors for the St. Elizabeth Hospital Foundation and also serves on the Development Committee for the ACES/Xavier Education System.
Pat is married to Kelly L. Koenen, also an attorney. He and Kelly are the proud parents of three children: Brian, Bradley and Lauren.
