CHICAGO ― Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP announced today that
Kirk A. Pinkerton and
Stuart J. Friedman, both formerly name partners of Pinkerton and Friedman, P.C., have joined the firm’s Northwest
Indiana Office (
Schererville), expanding the firm’s corporate and transactional practices, including trust and estate planning.

Prior to joining Hinshaw, Mr. Pinkerton was the President and Managing Director of Pinkerton and Friedman, P.C., a Munster, Indiana, law firm where he practiced since 1976. He focuses his practice in corporate and tax law, representing businesses, health care entities and high net worth individuals in sophisticated tax and estate planning matters. He has substantial experience in both federal and state tax matters, corporate law, health care law, employee benefits and business litigation. He represents health care clients in matters concerning Stark, anti-kickback laws and other compliance issues, as well as in transactions, investigations and taxation matters.
Mr. Friedman previously served as Corporate Secretary, Shareholder and Director of Pinkerton and Friedman, P.C., where he practiced since 1978. He concentrates his practice in estate planning and trust administration, including representing closely held corporations and high net worth individuals with complex estate planning needs. He also drafts corporate buy-sell agreements and represents shareholders in disputed matters involving closely held corporations.
Messrs. Pinkerton and Friedman join a national business transactions practice group comprised of more than 100 attorneys. The practice group provides comprehensive services to closely held and public corporations, entreprenuers, general and limited partnerships, banks, insurance companies and other financial institutions in corporate, M&A, tax, securities, regulatory, real estate and general commercial matters.

Mr. Pinkerton began his legal career in 1975 as an associate at Given, Dawson & Cappas in East Chicago, Indiana. From 1976 to 1981, he was a Senior Associate and then a Partner at Roth Yonover & Pinkerton, the predecessor firm to Pinkerton and Friedman. He earned his J.D. from Indiana University School of Law, and B.A., with Honors, in Political Science and Religious Studies, from Indiana University at Bloomington. He is a candidate for a Masters Degree in Liberal Arts from the University of Chicago. He is admitted to practice in Indiana, and before the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Indiana; the U.S. Court of Appeals, Seventh Circuit; and U.S. Tax Court.
Active throughout his career in community service, he is a past president of both Planned Parenthood Affiliates and Calumet Goodwill Industries, and a past director of the Rotary Club of Hammond, Indiana. He has also been active on advisory boards and in fundraising for Indiana University and Indiana University School of Law.
Mr. Friedman is past Chairman and current member of the Planning Commission, Town of Munster, Indiana. He is also a member of the Board of Zoning Appeals for the town of Munster and a past president and member of the board of trustees of Munster’s Rotary Club. He serves as legal counsel for Temple Beth-El Endowment Fund in Munster, and also served as secretary and as a member of the temple’s board of trustees for many years.
Mr. Friedman earned his J.D. from the University of Miami School of Law and LL.M. in Estate Planning also from the University of Miami School of Law. He is admitted to practice in Indiana, Illinois, Florida, the District of Columbia and U.S. Tax Court. In 2007 he was certified by the Indiana State Bar Association as an Estate Planning and Administration Specialist.
